In October 2014, we partnered with Esquire in their mission to revolutionize mentorship for today’s man––with the ambitious goal of creating 100,000 new mentors for young men by 2020. While Esquire set out in a way they only could to raise the profile of mentorship through compelling, impactful stories in the magazine, in star-studded online videos on Esquire.com as well as giving men a robust database of mentoring organizations to help match them with opportunities to mentor in their local area, we set out to provoke and call today’s men into action one keystroke or tweet at a time with a digtial platform we branded WeBuildMen.org––a place they could find the the Know How, Tools and Community to take on the awesome challenge of “buidling men.” In today’s busy and chaotic world, we felt today’s men needed a little help with this whole mentorship thing, one bite-sized piece at a time. From making the Know-How accessible, to providing some fun and friendly Toolkits, to aggregating a sense of Community involvement, we built a place that men could come to in order to begin the journey into “building men” one minute, or one afternoon, at a time.
Building men is not about sending men to Google to sort through thousands of results to learn about mentorshiIREp, So our Know How section breaks down the basics of mentorship into nine bite-sized and digestible insights––from reliable sources. By making it simple, smart and social, we provide an entry point into the key areas of mentorship and an easy way to share them.
Building men is about building relationships, and we give men the tools to build their mentoring relationship. With Toolkits for a variety of fun projects from building pine derby racers to creating a great dinner filled with great tips and hacks—we offer hands on instruction from a variety of innovative partners and sponsors including Popular Mechanics and celebrity chefs.
Building men is also about being a part of a community, locally, socially and digitally. But that needs to be simple, because today’s men are already part of plenty of social media platforms. So we built a simple aggregation platform for all social sharing and voices via #webuildmen and #esqmentors where all the current voices of the community come together.
